Serena’s In-the-Moment Ballet Dance to Hundreds of Eyes

Last week:

Me: Digging out the crumpled papers from Serena’s barely-gonna-make-it tattered princess backpack… “Serena, there’s a talent show at your school, it says here. You going to be in it?”

Serena: “Um, yeah.”

Me: (surprised) “Really? Okay, cool. Whatcha’ gonna do for your talent?”

Serena: “Ballet.”

Me: “Are you going to do it with anyone else?”

Serena: “Yeah, I think Maddie S.”

Me: “Does Maddie S. know about it?”

Serena: “No, not yet.”

[Note to self. Talk to Jim. Ask if he’s talked to Maddie S.’ mom about the talent show (he knows all the moms better than I do) and figure out if Maddie S. is actually game to do this.]

A few days later:

Jim: “Serena, Maddie S.’ mom said she has another performance that day so she can’t do the talent show. Do you still want to do the show?”

Serena: “Yeah.”

Me and Jim look at each other, eyebrows raised. Wondering: Will she really do this show solo?

[I go out of town unexpectedly for 5 days. Serena goes to the scheduled try outs and gets into the show. Then she goes to practice – and still plans to do the show, solo. Jim and I both wonder what will happen when she sees the audience from stage. But we stick with acting like this is all not that big of a deal, just like Serena has been doing all along.]

~Cut to yesterday, last day of Kindergarten and day of the talent show~
(sorry for the shaky video, I was busy crying my eyes out.)

This is MESMERIZING. We sat the kids down, read the post out loud to them and then let them watch the video. She’s so in-the-zone, focused, and BRAVE! Afterwards, Marabee was mimicking with some fancy dance moves around the living room. Thanks for sharing!

Aww, thanks for the awesome words Aunt Nancy & Uncle Aaron. Serena watches the video sort of mesmerized, too. Me, too. I can’t believe how brave she is. Marabee – keep up the moves! xoxo
